Witch Costume Ideas

Which witch is which? For Halloween this year, you can't go wrong with a tried-and-true classic like this. Witches come in all kinds, from the mild-mannered good witches to creepy, barely-human monstrosities with haggard faces that fly on their broomsticks and steal children from their bedrooms.

Kids Witch

Does your kid love to ride around on a broom stick, pretending that she has magical powers? Would you like to see more warts on her face than yours? Put your child in a kid's witch costume this Halloween.

The first distinguishing feature of a witch will be her disturbing appearance. If you don't want to go overboard then some light makeup will do. However, if you really want to celebrate the season, you can buy witch makeup kits that even come with latex noses and warts. If you're not into applying anything to your kid's skin, you could also use a hooked nose that attaches with an elastic band, or a creepy witch mask.

Witches typically wear dark clothes that drapes loosely around the body. You can find a lot of pre-made witch costumes that will give you just that, or you can head to the fabric store and try making your own.

Another approach you can take if your witch is more of the haggard type is to dress her in rags. You can make these from scraps lying around the house or you can buy a hag costume from a Halloween store. The pointy hat is optional, but highly recommended. You might also do well to give your kid a broom to fly on. It has to be an old-fashioned broom with those old, gnarled bristles. You can find those very often at a party store.

Teen Witch

The dark witch costume is a favorite among teens. It allows them to appear evil, magical and attractive all at the same time. The main thing to remember about this costume is that all clothing and accessories should be black.

To get things going start with the hat. Dark witches are known for their long cone-shaped pointy black hats with a full brim. The very top of the hat needs to sag down a bit too. You can probably find one of these hats in a novelty store.

For clothing, the main pieces you will need are a long skirt, long-sleeve button shirt, cape, and scarf. Again, all these pieces need to be colored black. The shoes will also be black, but make sure they are high heel shoes because even witches have some style to them. At this point, you have the basic dark witch costume set up. But you don't want to stop there because you can have a lot of fun with the makeup and accessories.

For your face use black lipstick, eyeshadow, and nail polish. For the accessories a popular choice is the broomstick with black fibers on the end. To make a one, take a regular broomstick and spray paint the fibers with black paint. You may also find a premade one in the novelty store along with the hat.

Lastly, try wearing some black jewelry. It doesn't need to be all black, though. You could wear a couple of moon rings with black gemstones and a necklace with a black diamond hanging down. Obviously, you can use fashion jewelry for this as no one expects you to purchase anything authentic.

Sexy Adult Witch

Most people think of witches as ugly, but that's not always the case. Witches come in all kinds of shapes, sizes, and degrees of sexiness, so why not show your appreciation for the more attractive end of the witch spectrum and be a sexy witch for Halloween?

The first thing that you'll notice about a sexy witch is that her outfit tends to be rather impracticable. The best thing to do is wear a tight leather leotard or something that shows a similar degree of skin. Add some thigh-high black fishnet stockings - bonus points if the design of the stockings looks like spider webs - and you're well on your way to being someone's witch fantasy.

So far, your outfit establishes your sexiness, but not your witch-ness, so you will need the stereotypical pointy black hat. You can get these easily at a Halloween or party store. In fact, you might even be able to find the whole costume there, since there are often many sexy options.

Next, find yourself an old broom. You want something made of wood, like the kind that people used to sweep their houses many generations ago. If you can't find one, then maybe you can be a modern witch and fly around on a vacuum cleaner.

Hag Witch

Do you feel that there is a hag buried deep inside of your soul that is just waiting to burst out of you with a loud cackle? Dress up as a hag witch this Halloween and find out if it really is your true form!

For some people, Halloween is all about looking their best. For others, it's all about looking their worst! Hags are a part of folklore in a huge variety of cultures, and there just seems to be something in human nature that is a little wary of these wrinkly old witches. If your face is already a blanket of wrinkles that sends children screaming and running in the opposite direction, then you don't need anything extra in this department.

However, if your face is unfortunately attractive, then you will need to wear a mask or at least heavy makeup. Since a hag's features are very 3-dimensional, to say the least, a mask or some latex prosthetics will probably be superior to 2-D makeup effects.

Next will be your clothes. Almost always, a hag wears rags. These should be easy to make out of a large potato sack or something equally unappealing. You could also try buying some discount clothes from a second-hand store and making a patch-work outfit out of that.

Not all witches wear hats, so this is optional, but it certainly lends a sense of tradition. A nice pointy black hat is what you're looking for here. Now the hag's version of a magic wand is her dirty old cane. A gnarled cane made from an old tree branch would work perfectly here. It doesn't even require that you spend any money; just hunt one down in the woods and if you're brave enough to face a few real hags that might be living there.

To make your use of the cane further justified, you can walk with a crooked gait and wear a hump under your clothes. Are your friends ready to be hagridden tonight? Give them nightmares this Halloween with your best hag witch costume!
