Seven Deadly Sins Costume Ideas

The seven deadly sins is a concept from Christian teachings and considered cardinal vices that lead to immorality. They include: Greed, Envy, Gluttony, Lust, Sloth, Pride and Wrath. I've included some sinful Halloween costume ideas for your consideration:

Greed

The first sin on the list is greed. For this costume, we want to dress as extravagantly as possible. For men, a dapper suit, (or tux) nice shoes, a top hat, and some exorbitant fake jewelry. All of this can be purchased at a local Halloween store, but for real authenticity, feel free to break out your best three-piece suit. Another option would be hold onto a lot of money, or wear a fun money suit, fake of course?

For the ladies, an elegant dress, again with heaps of jewelry would look great. To really hammer home the "greed" concept, carry around bags of money and more jewelry. Feel free to get creative here, but the main idea is that you dress in an extremely high-brow, gaudy fashion.

Envy

When someone is "green with envy" it means they are extremely covetous of someone's possessions or advantages. For this one, both men and women either were a green mask or utilize some green eyeshadow or face paint.

If you really want to knock it out of the park, you can purchase a green wig or green hair dye as well. Be sure to wear an outfit that is entirely green. If you really want to hit home, you can paint (safe Halloween color set of course) your entire body green.

Gluttony

For this costume, there are two ways to go about it. First, you can stuff foam or poly-fil under your shirt and pants and appear to be "gluttonously overweight." Be sure to have a nice slab of meat (real or fake) in hand for your gluttons look.

As an alternative, you can also adorn yourself in a chef's costume from a local gag store. A tall chef's hat, the apron, the non-slip shoes. You can also make the costume messy by splattering pasta sauce or red paint across the outfit and around your mouth. Show up to a party like this and you will be the personification of gluttony.

Lust

For both men and women, this costume is going to appear a bit "sexy." Ladies, a curvy skirt, black stockings, a face full of your best makeup, a Marilyn Monroe birthmark, and some high heel shoes should send the message that you are the embodiment of all things lustful. A sexy devil outfit can work too. Another option is to wear only your underwear if it's going to be a wild adult Halloween party.

For the guys, an Under Armour muscle shirt (or a V-neck that shows some of your chest), some athletic joggers or shorts, a nice necklace, and some killer cologne will get the message across. Shirtless, bathrobe or underwear will work too depending on the type of party.

Sloth

Of course, you can simply dress up as an animal sloth by purchasing a costume at local Halloween store - or just were your regular clothing to show that you were too lazy find an outfit for Halloween. Alternatively, you can dress in an extremely "sloth-like" manner. You can walk around in a pair of pajama onesies (or a matching bottom and top pajama set). Beachwear will work too.

Feel free to carry around a sloth stuffed animal or pillow to really get the idea across. Be sure to utilize all of the mannerisms you can, such as yawning, rubbing your eyes, and just being generally lazy.

Pride

Pride is perhaps the hardest of the sins to illustrate as a costume. For this one, we want to channel our inner lion. Lions are so well known for their pride that even a group of young lions is referred to as a pride.

Aside from purchasing a full-body lion costume, you can get really creative with some effective face paint. Using a blend of oranges, yellows, and blacks, adorn your face in the colors of the prideful lion, being sure to make the nose and whiskers.

Wrath

Finally, we've arrived at one of the evilest of the sins - wrath! The color most associated with wrath is bright, glaring red. Both men and women want to wear an outfit that is entirely red, be it a suit, skirt, sweater, dress, etc. You can even die you're hair red for the occasion.

The main message to get across is that you are red with rage. You can also get creative by adding horns or carrying prop weapons. If you have a large group of friends, dressing up as a few of the seven deadly sins would guarantee laughs, cheers, and jeers at your next costume party!
